Chess News for You! Update!

Everyone was very supportive at the Parent Council meeting on January 16, 2007! They voted $500 for (CIC) to teach chess for Winter 2007, which leaves us to find $500 for the balance of the year from other sponsors. They also voted $100 for 10 new chess sets with laminated paper boards, which I (CIC) will buy and deliver to the school.

What About Chess?

What About Chess...? Chess is an ancient game of strategy over 1000 years old. In almost every country of the world there are different versions of chess being played. The game of Chess is both a science and an art. It is seen as an excellent mental exercise for growing minds.Many studies show that students who play chess tend to be better at Math (Numeracy).

The Waterfront School is pleased to have a Chess Club running again, back by popular demand! The Junior/ Intermediate Chess Club meets from 12:10 till 12:45 PM in Room 8; next to the school lunchroom. The Chess Club does not cost money and is an excellent opportunity for students to learn and improve their game.

About the Chess Institute of Canada Their mission is to teach chess in an environment which encourages the learning of math, reading, logic, sports, and life skills. Chess Institute of Canada was founded in 2005 by Ted Winick and David Cohen. In 2005, Chess Institute of Canada became a Canadian non-profit corporation.
